Kenya’s university gaming culture is receiving a major boost after PUBG MOBILE and Infinix unveiled a nationwide varsity esports competition expected to attract some of the country’s best student gamers.
The newly launched PUBG MOBILE Varsity Showdown (PMVS) is set to run from mid-May to late June 2026 and will feature fierce competition between university squads battling for cash prizes, gaming smartphones and campus bragging rights.

The tournament marks one of the biggest university-focused esports initiatives in Kenya as mobile gaming continues exploding among young people across campuses and digital communities.
Organizers say the competition is designed not only to entertain but also to grow Kenya’s esports ecosystem by creating opportunities for talented gamers to showcase their skills on a national platform.
The showdown will feature multiple stages including online qualifiers, quarterfinals, semifinals and a highly anticipated offline grand finale that will bring together the country’s top-performing squads.
Participants will compete for a USD 1,000 prize pool alongside 10 powerful Infinix GT 30 Pro smartphones specifically engineered for competitive mobile gaming.
According to Infinix, the GT 30 Pro has been designed to deliver high-performance gameplay through faster response speeds, smoother graphics, advanced cooling systems and immersive visuals tailored for esports competition.
The launch also comes as Infinix prepares to expand its gaming-focused smartphone lineup in Kenya with the upcoming GT 50 Pro, further signaling the brand’s aggressive push into Africa’s growing gaming and youth technology markets.
Organizers say each participating squad will consist of four players and one substitute, with official PUBG MOBILE tournament scoring systems and competitive rules expected to guide the competition.
Beyond the matches themselves, the campaign will also include campus ambassador activations, gaming creator collaborations, online community tournaments and user-generated content challenges aimed at strengthening Kenya’s gaming culture.

The initiative arrives at a time when esports is rapidly transforming into a serious entertainment and business industry globally, with African gaming communities increasingly attracting attention from technology brands, content creators and digital investors.
PUBG MOBILE says it remains committed to supporting African gaming communities through creator programs, local partnerships and culturally localized experiences for players across the continent.
The company has also announced plans to deepen African representation within the game itself through music, local creators, voice packs, outfits and culturally inspired content designed specifically for African gamers.
Meanwhile, Infinix continues positioning itself aggressively within Kenya’s youth market through gaming smartphones, smart devices and creator-driven technology experiences.
University students interested in joining the PUBG MOBILE Varsity Showdown have now been encouraged to form teams and officially register online before the qualifiers begin.
