More than 1,000 runners gathered in Nairobi for the ‘Run for Seniors’ charity event organized by Mama Ibado Charity (MIC), raising over Ksh 11 million to support vulnerable elderly people in Isiolo and Kakamega counties.
The event featured 5km, 10km, and 15km races, drawing participants from across the country — from young athletes to corporate teams — all united by a single cause: to restore dignity and improve the lives of neglected senior citizens.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Hon. Justice Mohammed Ibrahim, Director of Mama Ibado Charity and a Supreme Court Judge, emphasized the need to care for those who came before us.
“We are not just running for fun. We are running to send a message — that no elder should be forgotten or left behind,” he said.
In a light moment, he added, “I’m ready to prove even judges can sweat for a cause. But if you find me walking at the 5km mark, remember — I’m pacing myself with dignity.”
Ahmed Jibril, President of Mama Ibado Charity, thanked all participants, partners, and sponsors, calling the event a “step in the right direction” in changing public attitudes towards Kenya’s ageing population.
“You are not just runners; you are advocates for dignity. Every stride you took today helps feed and care for an elder who would otherwise go without,” he said.
748 Air Services Managing Director, Moses Mwangi, expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and generous contributions. He said the money raised will fund monthly food rations and essential medical care.
“We often talk about youth empowerment. But today reminds us that our seniors also need to be seen, supported, and respected,” Mwangi noted.
Hass Petroleum Chairman, Abdinasir Ali Hassan, reiterated his company’s commitment to supporting elder care through its ongoing partnership with Mama Ibado Charity.
“This is not just charity. It’s justice,” he said, pointing to the role the organization plays in enrolling elders into the Social Health Insurance Fund to ensure free access to critical medical services.
The success of the Run for Seniors sets the stage for future campaigns that center the needs of Kenya’s elderly — a group often overlooked despite their contribution to society. MIC says the annual event will now become a key part of its mission to deliver food security, healthcare, and dignity to over 1,000 elders.
