The Odúa Progressive Union (OPU) Kenya, also known as the Yoruba Association of Kenya, staged a clean‑up on Lenana Road in Nairobi on Thursday, 1 October 2026, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day.
The activity formed part of the diaspora’s celebrations of Nigeria’s liberation from British rule on 1 October 1960 and was presented as a way to give back to Kenya through environmental conservation.
Participants included OPU members, volunteers, friends of the Yoruba community and local stakeholders, all working together to improve the cleanliness of the public space.
The Nairobi City County Government’s Department of Environment collaborated with OPU Kenya and other local partners, underscoring the role of public‑private partnerships in tackling urban waste.
OPU Kenya highlighted that community‑led clean‑ups reinforce civic responsibility while strengthening ties between Nigerian nationals and the broader Kenyan community.
Representatives of OPU Kenya stressed their commitment to work with authorities and residents to promote sustainable development, peaceful coexistence and deeper Kenya‑Nigeria relations.
The event also served as a platform for the Nigeria High Commission’s representative and OPU officials to reaffirm their dedication to cultural preservation, environmental responsibility and bilateral friendship.
Chief Mrs Madam Paulina George Otieno‑Matron, the OPU matron, thanked the Kenyan government and participants as the clean‑up concluded.
