A video recorded on the night of 28 October captured a person handling a fuel nozzle and pouring petrol onto a vehicle at the Shell Westview service station in Nairobi while another individual watched nearby.
Vivo Energy Kenya, the distributor of Shell‑branded fuels in the country, said the clip raised concerns about compliance with safety standards at its stations.
In a statement released on 29 October, the company described the conduct as reckless, irresponsible and negligent, noting that it poses a serious risk to public safety and could endanger lives.
Vivo Energy emphasized that the behaviour shown does not align with the safety expectations it sets for all Shell service stations, where safety is described as the highest priority.
The retailer operating the Westview outlet reported the incident to the relevant authorities immediately, prompting an investigation and any necessary action.
Vivo Energy said it is reviewing the circumstances and will reinforce safety requirements to ensure consistent standards across its network, while thanking the public for drawing attention to the footage.
The company did not disclose whether the individuals captured in the video have been identified or if any arrests have been made.
Petrol’s high flammability means that careless handling or spillage can create serious fire hazards, especially in the presence of an ignition source.
