The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that Colombian national Álvaro Pulido, 62, was taken into custody during a Homeland Security Task Force operation on Sunday.
Pulido faces two federal indictments alleging the laundering of more than $2 billion tied to Venezuelan government bribery schemes, according to the U.S. State Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors allege that Pulido and four co‑defendants bribed Venezuelan officials to secure contracts for food and medicine distribution to impoverished citizens, then overcharged the government and moved the profits through overseas bank accounts, including in the United States.
The indictment also links Pulido to a separate $350 million laundering operation involving Alex Saab, using Florida‑based bank accounts to process funds from a Venezuelan currency‑exchange bribery scheme.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and State Department had previously offered a $10 million reward for information leading to Pulido’s arrest.
Pulido, who had been detained in Venezuela since March 2023 on accusations of diverting profits from state oil company PDVSA, is scheduled to appear before a U.S. court on Tuesday.
His arrest follows the recent guilty plea of Alex Saab, another Colombian businessman with close ties to the Venezuelan government, who pleaded guilty to money‑laundering charges in a U.S. court last month.
