The Home Office announced on 29 October 2026 that charities can now apply to become approved sponsors under two schemes: the Named Community Sponsorship scheme and the Refugee Study route.
Under the Named Community Sponsorship scheme, approved charities will be responsible for arranging suitable accommodation, helping refugees settle into local communities and providing employment support.
The Refugee Study route is designed to give eligible refugees access to education in the UK, with charities again acting as the designated sponsors.
Both schemes exclude individuals and private companies from acting as sponsors, placing the entire sponsorship responsibility on approved charitable organisations.
The Home Office indicated that a government‑imposed cap will limit the number of refugees admitted through these routes, though the exact quota and eligibility criteria for charities have not been disclosed.
First refugees are not expected to arrive under either pathway until autumn 2027, giving charities roughly a year after the application opening to secure approval and prepare for settlement responsibilities.
Charities interested in participating are advised to submit applications promptly and familiarize themselves with the sponsorship duties outlined by the Home Office.
Prospective refugees should await further details on eligibility, the number of places available and the specific application process before determining their qualification for either route.
