The UK government confirmed that nationals who can travel without a visa must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure.

The ETA costs about £20 (roughly KSh 3,400) and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, allowing multiple trips during that period.

Applications are made through the official UK ETA app or the government website; travelers are warned against third‑party sites that charge extra fees.

The digital permission is required for short stays such as tourism, family visits or brief study, permitting up to six months per visit subject to immigration rules.

An approved ETA does not guarantee entry; border officers retain the final decision and may still assess eligibility on arrival.

British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement, while other nationals must verify their status using the UK’s visa‑checking service.

Kenyan passport holders are not eligible for the ETA and must apply for a Standard Visitor visa, providing details on purpose, accommodation, finances and intent to leave the UK.

The ETA regime came into effect on 25 February 2026 for the 82 countries listed as visa‑exempt, replacing the previous requirement for a traditional visitor visa for those nationals.
