The UK government has defined the academic qualifications that foreign graduates must hold to qualify for the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa, a route that does not require a UK employer sponsorship.
Applicants must possess an overseas qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree, a master's degree or a doctorate, and the qualification must have been awarded within the five years preceding the application.
The degree alone is insufficient; the applicant must also have the qualification assessed by Ecctis, the body that compares international qualifications against UK standards, to confirm authenticity and equivalence.
Ecctis evaluates the qualification itself but does not verify whether the awarding university appears on the list of institutions eligible for the HPI route; that check must be done separately by the applicant.
Graduates who have previously obtained an Ecctis assessment can reuse the certificate for a new HPI visa application, avoiding the need for a repeat assessment.
The HPI visa permits holders to reside in the UK and seek employment or engage in other permitted professional activities without first securing a job offer or employer sponsorship.
While meeting the degree and assessment requirements is essential, approval also depends on satisfying other eligibility conditions, including the university’s inclusion on the approved list.
