President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to deliver hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel to the United States and other global markets in the coming months, marking a reversal from his earlier position on Russian energy.
The announcement follows legislation signed by Trump three weeks earlier that authorized new sanctions and tariffs on nations that import Russian oil and gas.
Trump said the move is intended to address soaring fuel prices that have hurt American consumers and agricultural producers, noting diesel’s importance for farm machinery and transport in states such as Iowa, Kansas, Texas and Ohio.
In a post on Truth Social, the president emphasized that lowering fuel costs for farmers, ranchers and truckers is his top priority as the nation approaches the November midterm elections.
The United States consumes about 3.6 million barrels of diesel each day; if Russia supplies the promised 300,000 tons this month, it would represent roughly half of the daily U.S. diesel consumption.
Early voting has already begun in many states, with the midterm election scheduled for November.
