The Trans Nzoia county government has ordered all occupants of the Masinde Muliro Market – also known as the Multi‑Storey Business Complex – in Kitale to clear their stalls within 24 hours.
County executive committee member for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development Omulo Pius Gumo signed the notice, which targets every trader on the premises at Kitale Municipality Block 4/276.
The eviction is based on the absence of an Occupation Certificate, which the county says breaches the Physical and Land Use Planning Act 2019 and the 2021 regulations.
Traders who hold a valid allocation document, lease or written authority are instructed to submit the paperwork to the CECM office within the 24‑hour window for verification of their tenancy status.
The county warned that any trader who fails to comply will be subject to enforcement action, including the re‑securing of stalls, with the costs recovered from the occupants.
County officials also noted damage to county‑owned property, reporting that padlocks on some stalls had been broken and stating that tampering with such assets is unlawful and may be referred to police for prosecution.
Traders were urged to act quickly to limit losses, as the notice threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of small‑scale vendors who depend on the market for daily income.
