Christine Kavale, a wheelchair user who operates her laptop and phone with her mouth, has been unable to clear the Quantitative Techniques unit for three years, delaying her Human Resources Management diploma at Thika Technical Training Institute.
The unit demands solving complex mathematical problems that carry most of the marks, but Kavale can only attempt theory‑based questions worth five or six marks because of her disability.
She sat the exam four times in consecutive series, receiving a referral each time, and KNEC had already referred her case in July 2023.
Kavale explained that the final KNEC series at her institute was scheduled for July and that exam registration had closed, making another attempt impossible without special intervention.
Disability advocate Jonathan Metet, after learning of the case through the Nairobi County disability network, contacted Kavale, gathered details and escalated the matter to KNEC’s Disability Mainstreaming Unit.
Metet credited KNEC official Dickens Ogony for taking ownership of the case and working with senior staff to push it through the relevant department, leading to a review that cleared the obstacle.
Following the review, Kavale’s graduation is now described as “within reach,” after she missed the March ceremony that took place earlier this year.
