Medikea, a Tanzanian health‑technology firm that runs its own clinics, laboratories and pharmacies, announced a $1.2 million pre‑seed round aimed at opening new sites in Arusha and Morogoro, bringing its total to four clinics.
The round was led by Baobab Network, Catalyst Fund and develoPPP Ventures, with participation from Madica, Impacc, Hustle Fund, O’Shaughnessy Ventures, Madiro and an unnamed angel investor.
Medikea plans to treat more than 100,000 patients in the next 12 months and expand its clinic count from four to ten across Tanzania by the close of 2027, before considering entry into other African markets.
The new capital will fund the network growth, product development and the addition of specialist services such as paediatrics, women’s health, dermatology, fertility and chronic disease care.
Medikea serves both out‑of‑pocket patients and insured members, partnering with NHIF, Jubilee Insurance, Assemble Insurance and GA Insurance to broaden access.
Co‑founder and CEO Dr Elvis Silayo argues that owning the full episode of care – from consultation through diagnostics to pharmacy – reduces costs and improves profitability compared with software‑only models.
Catalyst Fund partner Maxime Bayen highlighted the model’s potential to deliver a more affordable, continuous and climate‑resilient outpatient service, citing rising climate‑related health risks in the communities Medikea serves.
