Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana told residents in flood‑prone zones that the county will not deploy rescue boats for people who refuse to evacuate after flood warnings have been issued.
He instructed the county’s Chief Officer for Special Programmes to keep all rescue vessels off‑limits for those who remain in flooded areas, directing that no boat be switched on to look for such persons.
According to the governor, the boats will be reassigned to essential duties, such as supporting schools, rather than repeatedly rescuing people who declined to leave.
Godhana used the biblical story of Noah to illustrate the danger of waiting, describing how rising water forces occupants from the bedroom to the bed, then to a cupboard and finally to the rooftop.
He warned that staying in flood‑affected zones could have deadly consequences, especially for families with children, and urged people to move while safe routes are still accessible.
The governor also cautioned against using vehicles, such as Probox trucks, to navigate flooded streets, stressing that personal safety must take precedence over attempting to travel through water.
