A Super Metro bus travelling in Nairobi swerved off the road and collided with a parked 14‑seater matatu after a traffic police officer allegedly removed the ignition keys while the bus was still carrying passengers.
According to a witness video, the driver attempted to brake once the keys were taken, but the braking system did not respond, prompting him to deliberately steer the bus onto the roadside pavement to avoid a larger collision.
The bus struck the stationary matatu, bringing it to a stop, and also damaged at least one other vehicle, leaving three vehicles in total requiring repairs.
Passengers and onlookers were left terrified as the driver lost control, with the crash prompting a crowd of Nairobi residents to surround the traffic officer at the scene.
Residents accused the officer of reckless conduct, blocking his path and demanding he remain until the owners of the damaged vehicles received some form of redress.
Footage of the confrontation, showing the officer on a phone call while the crowd pressed forward, has circulated widely online, reigniting public frustration over traffic police behaviour on Nairobi roads.
