Sudan’s former president Omar al‑Bashir was moved from the detention centre in Merowe to Aliaa Specialist Military Hospital in Omdurman for treatment and medical examinations, according to his lawyer Mohamed Alhassan Alameen.
The 82‑year‑old has been under military custody since the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023, initially held at a facility near Khartoum before being transferred north to Merowe in September 2024.
His relocation to the capital follows a September 2024 move to Merowe that was prompted by health concerns, a step that also saw two other senior detainees released on medical grounds.
Details of Bashir’s medical condition have not been disclosed, and the specific symptoms that led to the latest assessment remain unknown.
His defence team argues that specialist procedures unavailable in Sudan are required and cites a preliminary approval for overseas treatment, though final clearance from senior military and political officials has not yet been granted.
Bashir’s family disputes the claim of approval, saying they have received no official notification authorising his departure and have appealed to army chief and Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan for permission to seek treatment abroad.
The former president remains subject to ongoing legal proceedings, including a case over the 1989 coup that was disrupted by the war and a separate conviction for corruption, while the International Criminal Court continues to seek his surrender on Darfur‑related charges.
