Former Nairobi Governor and NEDP leader Mike Sonko has publicly warned that the Sonko Rescue Team provides all its services at no cost and that any demand for payment is a scam.

The warning follows a recent case where a man seeking a wedding limousine from the team was allegedly asked to pay more than KSh30,000 before the vehicle could be secured.

According to Sonko, the man was approached by individuals claiming to be his personal assistants who insisted on payment, a claim the former governor says does not reflect the team’s operating procedures.

Sonko emphasized that services such as wedding limousines, funeral assistance and other support are offered free of charge to any Kenyan, regardless of tribe, race or political affiliation.

He instructed anyone who has been asked for money in the team’s name to return the funds to the victim and warned that perpetrators – whether staff, relatives or associates – will face disciplinary action.

The incident has been reported to police, with investigations underway to identify those involved and determine the circumstances of the alleged demand.

Sonko urged the public not to hand over any money to anyone claiming payment is required for rescue team services and to report such attempts directly to him or the nearest police station.

He added that the latest episode should serve as a reminder for Kenyans to verify any payment requests before complying, reinforcing the team’s policy of free, non‑discriminatory assistance.
