Ebro Ahmed, a 27‑year‑old Somali resident of Saint Paul, was playing soccer when he saw a school bus travelling at about 10 mph with its doors open and warning lights flashing.
He ran toward the vehicle, climbed aboard and discovered the driver had collapsed, apparently experiencing a medical emergency.
Although Ahmed had never driven a bus before, he managed to bring the vehicle to a stop within seconds, despite initially confusing the gear controls and briefly putting the bus into reverse.
Two girls seated near the front assisted him; Ahmed handed his phone and glasses to one of them before focusing on stopping the bus.
After securing the bus, Ahmed called 911, and paramedics arrived to attend to the driver while the school district dispatched a replacement bus for the children.
Saint Paul Public Schools confirmed that none of the 19 students aboard were injured, though some arrived home late and were understandably shaken.
The district publicly thanked Ahmed on Facebook, praising his quick thinking for protecting the children and assisting the driver.
Ahmed modestly declined to view his actions as extraordinary, despite the widespread praise he received in local media.
