Siaya County Referral Hospital is undergoing a major modernisation that will raise its capacity to 500 beds and convert it into a Level 5 referral hospital, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced on 9 October.
The expansion is being implemented jointly by the national and county governments, with construction led by Kenya Defence Forces engineers.
Civil works for the new Surgical Theatre and ICU Complex have been completed and the unit is now being equipped ahead of its operational launch.
The complex will house four modern operating theatres, a 10‑bed intensive care unit and a Central Sterile Services Department.
Additional diagnostic facilities will include pharmacies, X‑ray services and a CT‑scan machine to strengthen the hospital’s ability to manage complex cases.
Work is also progressing on a Mother and Child Complex, an Accident, Emergency and Outpatient Department with a dialysis centre, and expanded inpatient wards to ease congestion and improve isolation capacity.
The Ministry of Health’s National Equipment Supplies Programme will provide digital X‑ray systems, advanced laboratory equipment and specialised cardiology units to complement the new infrastructure.
The upgrade aligns with the government’s Universal Health Coverage reforms, linking infrastructure investment to health‑financing measures that aim to reduce out‑of‑pocket payments for households.
