Kenyan influencer Shanice Juma posted an Instagram reel on 31 October outlining a total spend of KSh 535,000 to convert a 40‑foot shipping container into a row of five rental units.

The container itself was the largest expense, with the 40‑ft unit shipped from China to Mombasa at an estimated cost of between KSh 350,000 and KSh 400,000 before any modifications.

Five rolling shutter doors were installed to divide the interior, each priced at KSh 22,000, bringing the door line‑item to KSh 110,000.

Repainting the container for a fresh appearance cost KSh 30,000, while welding and fabrication labour for interior partitioning added another KSh 20,000.

The video showed the finished product as a sleek black container mounted on a trailer with five shutter doors, ready for tenants.

Juma framed the reel as Episode 1 of an ongoing series and said future videos will reveal the rental pricing and how long she expects it will take to recoup the investment.

The transparency of the cost breakdown resonated with young Kenyans, many of whom commented that they had been curious about the feasibility of container‑shop ventures.
