Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, was found dead after collapsing inside a hotel room on 5 October 2026.

Police confirmed that the lecturer had checked into the hotel with 21‑year‑old Angela Defa Jacob before the incident occurred.

The incident took place at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, around 8 p.m., according to the police report.

Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said Jacob was sent to fetch water shortly after checking in, and when she returned she found Dr Uwuigbe lifeless on the floor.

Three individuals – the hotel owner, the hotel manager and Jacob – were taken into custody on 8 October 2026 as detectives began an investigation.

Police have not disclosed the cause of death, and the results of any post‑mortem examination have not been made public.

Dr Uwuigbe’s remains were placed at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary following the incident.

Ambrose Alli University’s public relations officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed the lecturer’s employment but stressed that the university had no involvement in the events.
