Search and rescue teams have been deployed to Baraka, Olkaria Village in Kajiado South after a person was reported missing while trying to cross an overflowing river on the night of 30 October.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident and urged the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads, highlighting the danger of swollen waterways.
In Nairobi, heavy showers on 31 October caused sections of First Avenue in Parklands near Oshwal School to become submerged, leaving motorists struggling to navigate the flooded road.
Similar flooding was reported at Githurai Roundabout after overnight rainfall, disrupting movement for both motorists and pedestrians.
The Kenya Meteorological Department’s seasonal outlook predicts enhanced rainfall across more than 40 counties, including Nairobi and Kajiado, with prolonged wet spells and occasional isolated storms.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja noted that the county has identified 227 flood‑prone hotspots across its 17 sub‑counties, with up to 100,000 residents at risk of displacement in a worst‑case scenario.
The county has cleared 26 of 61 critical drainage sites, undertaken river desilting, and is preparing temporary shelters for residents who may be affected.
Authorities have also urged residents to heed weather advisories, avoid flooded routes, and move to safer areas when instructed, while the Kenya Red Cross reminded anyone needing emergency help to call its toll‑free number 1199.
