M‑PESA Jumbe is a Safaricom service that lets business owners assign staff members to receive payment notifications on their personal phones, eliminating the need for the owner’s phone at the till.

When a customer pays, the owner still gets the standard M‑PESA confirmation, while staff receive a separate Jumbe receipt that omits the account balance, allowing it to be shown at the counter without exposing sensitive information.

The staff alert includes the transaction reference, amount, business name, payment number, date and time, and a JumbeID that replaces the customer’s full name and phone number with initials and the last two digits of their number.

Jumbe alerts do not grant staff access to the owner’s balance, PIN, statement or full transaction history, preserving financial privacy.

Merchants add staff through the *234# USSD menu, where each nominee receives an invitation and must accept before alerts begin; the service works on basic phones without mobile data.

A Till or Paybill account can have up to 50 recipients, and any suspended alerts still count toward this limit until the owner removes the user.

Staff can pause or opt‑out of alerts via the USSD menu; if they opt out, the merchant must re‑nominate them and obtain fresh consent before alerts resume.

Alert delivery depends on the mobile network, and Safaricom does not guarantee instant SMS receipt, meaning staff may occasionally experience delays before confirming a payment.
