At the World Teachers’ Day ceremony in Kasarani, President William Ruto said the government will recruit 120,000 teachers by December 2026, exceeding the earlier target of 116,000 for 2027 and backed by a Sh784.5 billion education allocation for 2026‑27.

The recruitment drive also includes converting 20,000 contract teachers to permanent, pensionable positions, a move intended to improve job security and access to career‑progression pathways.

More than 126,000 teachers have been promoted since President Ruto took office, and the Teachers Service Commission has advertised over 34,000 additional promotion posts, with a request to raise the total to 50,000 pending government funding.

Revised career‑progression guidelines have been cleared by teachers’ unions and now await approval from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Salary improvements continue under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, with the first phase rolled out last year and the second phase earlier this year, supported by an additional Sh8.1 billion budget allocation.

Teachers have asked to shorten future CBA cycles from four to two years; the proposal is under review, which would allow more frequent salary and terms adjustments.

Healthcare coverage for teachers has been expanded through the Social Health Authority, doubling inpatient benefits to match those of other civil servants and adding public, faith‑based and private facilities to the scheme.

An agreement between the Affordable Housing Board, KNUT and KUPPET reserves 20 percent of units in the Affordable Housing Programme for teachers, with applications processed via the Boma Yangu platform.

A salary check‑off system is being set up so teachers can deduct housing payments directly from their pay, while savings and credit co‑operatives are developing loan products tailored to teachers’ income streams.

To accelerate pension payouts, the TSC and National Treasury are implementing a Pension Management Information System aimed at shortening the processing time for retirement claims.
