President William Ruto opened the construction of a Ksh 270 million inpatient block at Meteitei Sub‑County Hospital in Tinderet, Nandi County, as part of a drive to broaden quality health services for the area.

The new wing will add 50 beds, raising the hospital’s capacity from 66 to 116 beds and enabling it to serve an estimated 350,000 residents of Tinderet, Londiani and Muhoroni.

The expansion aligns with the Social Health Authority programme, under which 630,000 Nandi residents – about 72 % of the county’s population – are already registered for subsidised treatment.

To date, the government has spent Ksh 2.2 billion on treating county residents at dispensaries, health centres and referral hospitals, reflecting a broader push to improve health outcomes.

Ruto said the hospital upgrade, together with road, market and electricity projects, demonstrates the administration’s commitment to delivering development services across Kenya.

The additional beds are expected to ease pressure on existing facilities and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for inpatient care.

The hospital project forms part of a Ksh 20 billion road‑building programme covering 350 km in Nandi, alongside a Ksh 2.1 billion electricity connectivity scheme for 23,000 households.

A further Ksh 1.5 billion is earmarked for constructing 15 modern markets to improve trading conditions for small‑scale traders and businesses.
