An explosive device believed to have been fired by militia groups in Ethiopia landed close to Sessi Primary School in Moyale, Marsabit County, on Saturday night.

Police from Moyale Police Station secured the scene and confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Kenya Defence Forces officers were also notified of the incident, underscoring coordination between security agencies on the border.

The RPG strike marks the second such incident in the area since the cross‑border fighting began, following a prior episode that injured three people when bullets struck structures two weeks earlier.

Since the clashes started, more than 50,000 people have fled Ethiopia and taken refuge in Kenya, many of them women and children, creating urgent protection and service needs.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that arrivals have been fluid since October 22, with many staying with relatives, while others occupy temporary shelters in schools and churches.

UNHCR has deployed an emergency team to Moyale and is working with Kenya’s Department of Refugee Services and county authorities to deliver food, water, shelter, sanitation and health services.

Humanitarian partners—including IOM, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the Kenya Red Cross and other agencies—are conducting assessments and seeking $8.9 million to support up to 50,000 refugees over the next three months.

The appeal aims to provide lifesaving assistance such as emergency shelter materials, essential household items and protection services, particularly for children.
