Founded in 1926, Pumwani Maternity Hospital is marking its 100th anniversary with facility upgrades and a public campaign inviting Kenyans born at the hospital to share their birth years.
In 2025 the hospital recorded only two maternal deaths out of roughly 16,500 deliveries, a milestone linked to improved emergency response and timely referrals for complicated cases.
County Health and Nutrition Executive Committee Member Suzanne Silantoi noted that the hospital now runs two round‑the‑clock maternity theatres, supported by additional medical staff and an on‑site blood donation centre to aid mothers with severe bleeding.
The upgraded Newborn Unit, commissioned in June 2026, includes a central heating system and dedicated kangaroo‑mother‑care space, improving thermal regulation for premature infants by more than 75 percent, according to Medical Superintendent Dr Chris Mugambi.
Pumwani also houses Kenya’s Human Milk Bank, which by August 2025 had supplied screened donor milk to 1,887 newborns and extended its services to other county hospitals such as Mbagathi and Mama Lucy Kibaki.
The centenary campaign runs from 7 to 11 December 2026 under the theme "Pumwani @100 – A Century of Life and Legacy," using hashtags #PumwaniAt100, #NilizaliwaPumwani and #PumwaniBabies to collect stories from former patients and their families.
The county has introduced a CEO‑led management model for major hospitals, giving Pumwani dedicated executive oversight of daily operations, resource management and service delivery.
In May 2026 the President recognised Pumwani as the best‑performing hospital in maternal and newborn care, highlighting its national significance.
