People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro told party delegates at the PPK headquarters that the government must act before the weekend to reduce fuel prices, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of inflating costs for Kenyans.
Nyoro said the latest price adjustments announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) conflict with falling international oil prices, noting that the landed cost of diesel fell from Ksh 167 per litre in May to Ksh 138 per litre now.
He claimed that fuel importers’ margins have risen by 12%, costing the country an estimated Ksh 2.7 billion each month, money he says could be redirected to public services such as health care.
Nyoro proposed that Parliament remove the 16% value‑added tax (VAT) applied to fuel, arguing that eliminating this tax would immediately lower pump prices by Ksh 16 per litre.
He also suggested allocating Ksh 5.5 billion from the Ksh 25 billion Petroleum Development Levy approved in the budget to cushion consumers, a move he said could shave another Ksh 10 off fuel prices.
EPRA’s recent price rise of Ksh 12.93 for Super Petrol, Ksh 9.90 for diesel and Ksh 28.49 for kerosene was justified by higher international costs, with the landed cost of Super Petrol increasing 11.81% from August to September.
