Since his appointment in February 2023, Postmaster General John Kipyegon Tonui has led a comprehensive digital overhaul at Posta Kenya, restructuring the corporation around mail, courier, payments and property assets.
In the 2024/2025 financial year, Posta Kenya recorded more than 10% growth, a rise attributed to new revenue streams from digital payments, courier services and e‑commerce logistics.
A central element of the transformation is the development of a National Digital Address Infrastructure, a unified database of postal codes and physical locations supported by geospatial mapping and APIs.
The digital address system is intended to help banks, e‑commerce firms, logistics providers and government agencies verify addresses accurately, improving last‑mile delivery across the country.
Posta Kenya is also expanding PostaPay, its digital financial services platform, and strengthening agency‑banking partnerships to extend payment and remittance services through roughly 600 post offices nationwide.
The Universal Postal Union has noted Posta Kenya’s growing role in supporting government services and digital commerce.
Kenya’s standing in African digital postal services
Kenya is emerging as one of Africa’s more progressive players in digital postal services, moving away from paper‑based letter delivery toward technology‑driven logistics, payments and last‑mile solutions.
The country’s ambition mirrors initiatives in Japan and Singapore, where digital address codes and smart parcel lockers have become standard, underscoring Kenya’s intent to create comparable infrastructure for digital inclusion.
