Pope Leo XIV disclosed that doctors have identified a localized nodule in his lung and have recommended its removal, prompting him to schedule an operation in the coming days.

He announced the decision after delivering the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, thanking the faithful for their prayers and support.

The surgery is set to take place at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital early next week, according to Vatican statements.

Holy See Press Office director Matteo Bruni indicated that post‑operative recovery is expected to last about one week.

A lung nodule is typically a small growth that is often non‑cancerous, though the Vatican has not disclosed whether the Pope’s nodule is malignant.

The operation comes just before the Pope’s planned Latin America tour from 6 to 17 November, which includes stops in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.

It remains unclear if the surgery and the anticipated week‑long recovery will affect the itinerary, as no official comment on possible schedule changes has been released.

During the announcement, Pope Leo XIV reiterated his call for peace in Ukraine, urging safe grain transport through the Black Sea to protect vulnerable populations.
