Members of Parliament will give priority to six education‑related bills when the National Assembly reconvenes on Tuesday after a month‑long recess, the House says.

The bills, selected by the Liaison Committee during its retreat in Mombasa, address tertiary funding, basic education, national assessments, teacher training, curriculum development and the national qualifications framework.

Key proposals include a new Tertiary Education, Placement and Funding Bill that would allow students to obtain loans for university or TVET studies, with repayment after graduation, and a Basic Education Bill that would overhaul school governance, financing and learner welfare.

Other measures seek to replace the Kenya National Examination Council Act with a Kenya National Educational Assessments Council Bill, strengthen teacher preparation through a Pre‑Service Education and In‑Service Training Bill, and improve credential tracking via an amendment to the Kenya National Qualifications Framework.

Public participation and legislative timetable

The Education Committee is conducting a public participation exercise on the six bills, which is slated to finish by next Friday, after which a report will be tabled to move the bills to Second Reading and the Committee Stage.

During the Committee Stage, MPs will consider amendments raised during the public consultation before the bills are passed.

The accelerated schedule also sees MPs reconvening in the last week of January 2027—one month earlier than usual—to ensure the Budget Estimates, Appropriation and Finance Bills are passed before the March 2027 deadline.

What stakeholders should watch for

Education providers and teacher unions are advised to engage in the ongoing public participation process before the Friday deadline to influence the final wording of the teacher‑training and curriculum amendment bills.
