A bus carrying Lubiri High School students lost braking ability while descending Mengo Hill Road in Kampala on the morning of October 3, prompting a chaotic scene near a roundabout close to Cornerstone Plaza.

Eyewitnesses said the conductor jumped out of the moving vehicle and tried to wedge objects under the wheels to slow it, while local residents helped contain the situation until police arrived.

Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded and that three individuals – the driver, the conductor and a school patron – were arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Station.

The arrested parties were held for violating several transport regulations, including operating with an expired public service vehicle (PSV) licence, carrying five passengers over the licensed capacity of 67, and using severely worn tyres.

Police also noted the bus lacked required trip documents, leading to its impoundment and towing to the Old Kampala Police Station for further investigation.

After the incident, the rescued students were taken to a nearby mosque before police arranged an alternative bus to transport them back to Lubiri High School.
