Edwin Sifuna’s effort to register the Linda Mwananchi Movement by renaming The Equitable Party has encountered a formal objection.

Chepalungu parliamentary aspirant Ruto Festus submitted the objection to the Registrar of Political Parties on 21 October, requesting verification that the proposed rebranding complies with the party’s constitution and the Political Parties Act.

In his filing, Festus noted that the party’s National Executive Committee resolved on 8 October to pursue the name change but questioned whether the National Delegates Conference had subsequently approved the proposal, as required by party rules.

He cited Article 10.3.1 of The Equitable Party’s constitution, which mandates that any proposal affecting the party’s name, symbol, colours or constitution be presented to the National Delegates Conference for approval before it can be finalised.

Festus asked the Registrar to confirm from the party’s official records whether the National Delegates Conference had indeed approved the change, rather than assuming the NEC resolution suffices.

The party’s NEC reportedly initiated the rebranding process on 8 October and posted the proposed changes on the party’s website, after which the Registrar began the statutory gazettement under Section 20 of the Political Parties Act.
