The Nyeri Modern Market in Nyeri town has crossed the 61% construction milestone, offering a boost to local vendors and residents after just over a year of work.

Inspector of Works Rex Shiano reports that most of the substructure and superstructure are finished and the project is now in the walling and general finishing stage, with completion expected in the next three to four months.

The market is designed to accommodate roughly 750 traders and will include bulk stores, cold stores, general trading spaces, offices, shops and an ablution block.

Traders currently operating from a parking area adjacent to the site will gain a safer, cleaner environment once the market opens, moving away from dust, congestion and vehicle‑related risks.

Between 35 and 45 workers are engaged on the site each day, covering trades such as masons, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics and casual labour.

The construction hub also serves as a practical training ground for young people, with Building and Construction graduate Lucy Maingi gaining hands‑on stonework and plastering experience during her three‑week stint.

Maingi notes that many youths are earning an income through the project, highlighting its broader socioeconomic benefits for the county.

Having passed the 60‑percent threshold, the focus has shifted to completing the remaining works and preparing the facility for traders awaiting a modern commercial venue.
