The Nyamira County Referral Hospital is slated for a Sh1.7 billion upgrade that will expand its infrastructure and add specialised medical units.

Governor Amos Nyaribo announced the project in Nyamira on Wednesday, noting that the county has signed an agreement with the national government to implement the upgrade.

According to the governor, the expansion will double the hospital’s operational capacity and move it closer to Level Six standards, enabling it to provide more specialised services locally.

The upgrade will include new specialised clinics, which the governor said will drastically reduce patient referrals to facilities outside the county.

In parallel, the county has allocated Sh500 million to its Revolving Drugs Fund to improve the supply of essential medicines across public health facilities.

The governor highlighted partnerships with development organisations and private sector players, including Safaricom, to support broader healthcare infrastructure projects in the county.

Other ongoing projects mentioned include the modernisation of Masaba North Sub‑County Hospital in Keroka, construction of mother‑and‑child hospitals at Nyangena and Nyasiongo with the Safaricom Foundation, and the imminent commissioning of a Mother and Child Unit at Nyamusi Level Four Hospital.

The county is also recruiting additional medical personnel and urging hospital board members to manage resources prudently, while warning staff against absenteeism to ensure continuous patient care.
