Kenyan observers discovered that the registration number cited by the National Construction Authority (NCA) for the Eastleigh building that collapsed on October 23 does not appear in the authority’s public project registration portal.
The NCA’s press release said the project was registered on 30 July 2025 under Land Reference Number 36/II/40 and assigned registration number 53128815710410, but searches for that number return no matching records.
The statement also listed the developer as 9th Street Plaza Limited, the contractor as Stromax Holdings E.A Limited (registration 41669/B/0618), architect Emmanuel Mwangi Maina and structural engineer Joseph Muturi Mugu.
Governor Johnson Sakaja, who visited the site, confirmed the building had received construction approval but lacked an occupation certificate, meaning the ground‑floor businesses were operating illegally.
Somalia’s envoy to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, described the collapse as a tragedy for the Somali community, noting loss of life and destruction of businesses that serve as a key economic hub for the area.
The NCA has repeatedly urged the public to verify project status through its portal, a process that now appears ineffective for this high‑profile case, undermining confidence in the regulator’s monitoring system.
