The National Land Commission (NLC) published a Gazette notice on 28 October 2026 stating its intention to compulsorily acquire a 0.8401‑hectare parcel in Wajir County for the proposed Wajir Air Base.
The land, recorded as Wajir Township Block 2/1424, is owned by Elyas Sheikh Abdinoor and will be taken on behalf of the Ministry of Defence under Section 110 of the Land Act, which authorises compulsory acquisition for public purposes.
The NLC has invited interested persons to inspect the acquisition plans at its Ardhi House office in Nairobi (3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue) and at the County Coordinator’s office in Narok County.
A notice of inquiry into the acquisition will be published in the Kenya Gazette in line with Section 112 of the Land Act, marking the commencement of the formal legal process.
Strategic background of the proposed Wajir air base
Kenya currently operates two dedicated military air bases: Moi Air Base in Eastleigh, Nairobi, which serves as the Kenya Air Force headquarters, and Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki, the main tactical fighter base with the longest runway.
The proposed Wajir facility would add to this existing aviation infrastructure, complementing the network of forward operating bases and specialised military airfields already in use.
