The Ghana National Communications Authority has confirmed that MTN Ghana will be allocated new spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands, valued at roughly $202 million.
The award comprises two 20 MHz blocks in the 700 MHz band, priced at about $100.9 million, and a single 150 MHz block in the 3 GHz band, valued at about $101.1 million.
Each licence will run for 15 years once formally issued, and MTN Ghana is currently completing the required formalities and payments to finalise the acquisition.
The company says the licence payments are already accounted for in its equity free‑cash‑flow outlook, indicating the cost will not surprise investors or analysts.
After receiving the licences, MTN Ghana plans to operate the new airwaves alongside its existing spectrum, increasing network capacity and service quality, especially in congested areas.
The additional spectrum is central to MTN Ghana’s strategy to broaden 5G access for mobile users and deliver high‑speed broadband to more households.
The 700 MHz band offers wide‑area and indoor coverage, while the 3 GHz band provides the high speeds and capacity required for 5G, giving the operator flexibility to meet both coverage and data‑demand needs.
MTN Ghana announced the spectrum award as it marks 30 years of operations in the country, a milestone that underscores its growth into one of Ghana’s largest telecom providers.
Both MTN Group and MTN Ghana have pledged to keep the public informed of material developments as the rollout of the newly awarded spectrum and 5G services progresses.
