Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, known as Jalang’o, has proposed establishing a specialised university in Lamu that would train students in chemistry, chemical engineering and related sciences.

He argues that a dedicated institution would create a ready pool of skilled workers for the multi‑billion‑shilling Dangote oil refinery slated for the county.

The MP suggested the new university could follow the model of specialised campuses such as Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, focusing on pure and applied sciences.

He warned Lamu landowners not to sell property cheaply, noting that land values are likely to rise as the refinery attracts workers, businesses and investors.

Beyond the refinery, Jalang’o expects growth in real estate, hospitality, transport and other sectors, urging residents to position themselves to benefit from the anticipated economic boom.

He also highlighted the broader impact on the Coast region, saying the refinery could generate activity that extends to Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Tana River counties.

The proposal was voiced on a podcast ahead of President William Ruto and Aliko Dangote’s groundbreaking ceremony for the refinery, underscoring the timing of the call for government action.
