Fouzi Lekjaa, who leads the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), has been appointed Minister of Economy and Finance in Morocco’s newly formed government after the September 23 parliamentary elections.
He joins a 32‑member cabinet headed by Prime Minister Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, a government appointed by King Mohammed VI.
Born in Berkane in 1970, Lekjaa earned a degree in agricultural engineering from the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Rabat before completing studies at the National School of Administration.
He entered the public finance sector in 1997 as a financial inspector, later serving as Director of the State Budget from 2011 to 2021, and was appointed Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget in October 2021.
In his new portfolio, Lekjaa will oversee national fiscal policy, budget preparation, government spending oversight and the strategic allocation of public resources.
Lekjaa has also built a prominent sports profile, becoming president of RS Berkane in 2009 and FRMF president in 2014, guiding Morocco’s football teams to major successes including a World Cup semifinal in 2022.
His dual experience in public administration and sport has raised his political standing as Morocco prepares for large‑scale infrastructure projects linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co‑host with Spain and Portugal.
