Moi University announced that the 49th graduation ceremony, originally scheduled for Thursday 3 December 2026, will now take place on Thursday 10 December 2026, providing an additional week for candidates to complete required preparations.

The revision was communicated in a notice dated 26 October, signed by Professor Khaemba Ongeti, deputy vice‑chancellor for Academics, Research, Extension and Student Affairs, and addressed to all degree and diploma candidates finishing the 2025/2026 academic year.

Students were reminded to verify their examination results with their deans, confirm the spelling and order of their names, and settle any outstanding university fees or charges before the new ceremony date.

A spot check by TUKO.co.ke found several graduating students missing examination marks, a problem worsened by the lecturers’ strike that limits access to academic staff for result clarification.

The strike, which began on 2 October, involves the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), and stems from stalled negotiations on the 2025‑2029 collective bargaining agreement, pay and employment terms.

Unions are demanding progress on the new CBA, improved pay and employment conditions, and that university salaries be paid from the National Exchequer rather than student fees.

UASU’s Moi University chapter, led by Professor Robert Oduori, warned that unresolved local financial and staffing disputes – including a contested plan to make 75 lecturers redundant – could extend the disruption even if a national settlement is reached.

The university also faces broader financial challenges, with claims of KSh1.2 billion owed to lecturers under previous CBAs and over KSh3 billion outstanding in its pension scheme.
