Moi University announced the introduction of a digital class attendance system that requires students to register their presence with a selfie, phone location and Bluetooth signals.

The rollout will begin in the Schools of Information Sciences and Education, where lecture halls have already been equipped with the necessary electronic devices.

Students must download the attendance app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, sign in with their student ID and registration number, and use a single phone per account to prevent proxy attendance.

During each lecture, learners are required to take a clear selfie—without caps, sunglasses or masks—activate Bluetooth and location services, then select ‘check in’ on arrival and ‘check out’ at the end of the session.

Late arrivals (15 minutes after the scheduled start) are automatically marked as late, and failure to check out records the session as not attended.

Students who change phones must visit the university’s ICT office for account migration, as automatic access on a new device is not permitted.

The university says the system aims to curb ‘ghost’ students, resolve disputes over missing marks and improve monitoring of lecture participation, especially after a recent four‑week lecturers’ strike.

Training sessions on the new application will be conducted for students as academic activities resume.
