Johannesburg‑based fintech Mission Mobile announced that it has secured as much as 500 million rand (about $30.8 million) from investment firm DN Invest to broaden its smartphone financing operations.
The capital will be used to accelerate product development, enlarge the customer base and scale the technology and distribution infrastructure that underpins the business.
DN Invest’s contribution combines its own funds with ring‑fenced debt facilities, some of which are linked to the financed devices and the repayments they generate, giving the deal characteristics of an asset‑financing arrangement as well as a growth investment.
How Mission Mobile’s model works
Mission Mobile sells smartphones through mobile operators’ retail networks, bundling device financing with preferential voice and data rates and rewards for prepaid customers.
Its Beam platform evaluates consumers using earnings and spending data alongside traditional credit information, aiming to identify borrowers who are often excluded from conventional lending.
More than 80 % of South Africa’s roughly 108 million mobile connections are prepaid, a segment Mission Mobile says is harder for operators to retain because users can switch SIM cards freely.
Potential benefits for operators and consumers
For mobile operators, the model is designed to generate recurring revenue and improve subscriber retention by tying device ownership to ongoing prepaid plans.
Consumers gain the ability to spread the cost of a smartphone while preserving the flexibility of prepaid services, reducing the upfront financial barrier to device ownership.
Future steps and market outlook
Mission Mobile plans to leverage DN Invest’s existing relationships with South Africa’s major mobile networks to accelerate rollout of its financing and distribution infrastructure.
The company, founded in 2023 by brothers Tim and Adam Strike, will use the new funding to complete its own consumer‑vetting, billing, payments and onboarding systems that link point‑of‑sale decisions with recurring billing across its retail network.
