During the final day of Nairobi’s first Trust Summit, Nation Media Group CEO Geoffrey Odundo emphasized that despite the rise of alternative platforms, many Kenyans still depend on traditional media for accurate news.

Odundo warned that content from the outlet is often repurposed by other channels, altered to fit different narratives, and stressed the importance of tracing information back to its original source.

He added that speed in breaking news must not compromise verification, citing the premature reporting of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death as an example of responsible fact‑checking before going live.

Google’s Regional Director for Government Affairs in Sub‑Saharan Africa, Charles Murito, called for close cooperation among media houses, digital platforms, academia, civil society and governments to block the spread of misinformation.

Murito noted that the information ecosystem has expanded considerably compared with a few years ago, making verification of content more critical than ever.

The summit also featured remarks from former Mali Prime Minister Moussa Mara, who linked community‑level trust to broader societal confidence, and Kenyan officials urging African unity in global institutions.
