Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has officially rejected a circulating memo that claimed the institution would suspend academic activities ahead of a planned lecturers’ strike.
The memo, dated 28 September 2026 and purportedly from the Office of the Registrar, instructed students to leave campus by 2 October, secure personal belongings and await further notice.
MMUST urged students and staff to disregard the notice and to rely solely on the university’s official communication channels for any information on academic schedules.
Background to the impending lecturers’ strike
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) plans to begin a seven‑day nationwide strike at midnight on 2 October, protesting the government’s failure to honour the Return‑to‑Work Formula signed in November 2025.
UASU also highlighted delays in finalising the 2025‑2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement for university lecturers, noting that other public‑sector employees have already concluded their CBAs.
Potential effect on teaching if strike proceeds
If negotiations on the lecturers’ agreement remain unresolved, the strike could disrupt teaching across public universities, raising concerns among students and staff about academic continuity.
What students should do now
Students are advised to monitor MMUST’s official communication channels for authentic updates on class schedules and any possible adjustments.
