Former Chief Justice David Maraga used a town‑hall meeting with the Kenyan diaspora in Houston, Texas, on Sunday to outline his presidential priorities for 2027, emphasizing entrepreneurship, affordable capital and public accountability.

Maraga said Kenya needs an economic environment that enables entrepreneurs to start, expand and sustain businesses, and that stronger institutions are essential to attract investment, create jobs and drive growth.

He highlighted the contribution of the diaspora, noting that remittances and investments from Kenyans abroad support families, fund property purchases and finance productive sectors of the economy.

Citing Houston‑based entrepreneurs Nellie and Dennis Chege, Maraga illustrated how access to financing helped a small assisted‑living operation grow into a multi‑facility business employing dozens of workers.

He argued that many young Kenyans possess the skills and determination to build successful enterprises but are hindered by costly capital and cumbersome bureaucratic processes.

Maraga pledged to introduce policies that improve access to finance and create systems allowing businesses to expand, generate employment and contribute to economic growth.

Institutional reform and accountability were placed at the centre of his political message, with promises to protect public resources, strengthen oversight and end patronage and misuse of state assets.

Maraga referenced his experience leading the Judiciary as evidence of his capacity to build and manage effective institutions that deliver public services.

He noted that the diaspora is becoming an increasingly important constituency for politicians ahead of the 2027 General Election, and that engagement with Kenyans abroad will remain a key part of his campaign strategy.

Maraga thanked the Houston community for lively discussions, signalling that continued outreach to overseas Kenyans will shape his efforts to build support before the election.
