Malawi Airlines has issued a travel advisory reminding passengers that, as of 5 October 2026, foreign visitors staying in Kenya for less than 12 months must hold mandatory inbound travel health insurance.

The airline’s notice, dated 13 October, states the requirement applies to all tickets regardless of purchase date and that existing foreign travel policies are not accepted as a substitute.

The rule follows a circular from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) directing all scheduled and non‑scheduled international passenger operators to verify the insurance at check‑in and on arrival.

The insurance mandate is integrated into Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system, meaning applicants cannot complete payment on the portal without a qualifying policy.

Eligible travellers can purchase the required cover through the eTA website (https://etakenya.go.ke), where only insurers licensed under the Insurance Act are accepted.

The Gazette Notice No. 11492 of 29 July 2026 sets the minimum cover at US$50,000, including US$20,000 for medical expenses, US$25,000 for emergency evacuation, US$300 for prescribed medicines, US$1,000 for mental illness treatment and US$5,000 for repatriation of mortal remains.

Travelers are advised to secure the insurance before departure and to carry proof for verification at both check‑in and arrival in Kenya.

The new requirement adds an extra step and cost for international visitors, as well as for employers, travel agents and tour operators arranging trips to Kenya.
