LG Electronics announced an increased investment in technical and after‑sales service capabilities for East Africa, citing the need for higher skill levels to install, diagnose and repair increasingly sophisticated consumer appliances.

The company hosted the LG Electronics East Africa Service Skill Olympiad in Nairobi, bringing together service professionals from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Zambia and South Sudan.

Participants were evaluated in four categories – Media Solution, Home Solution, Residential Air Conditioner and a "Moment of Truth" segment that focused on the initial installation experience – covering fault diagnosis, repairs, problem‑solving, customer consultation and service delivery.

Top‑performing technicians received certificates, trophies, medals and LG appliances such as refrigerators, televisions and washing machines, reinforcing the competition’s role in recognising skill while promoting brand loyalty.

LG’s Chief Financial Officer for East Africa, Sisung Jin, said that investing in people and strengthening technical capabilities is essential for the company’s long‑term success, especially as poor installation or repair can erode consumer confidence.

The Service Olympics, launched in 2002 and expanded internationally in 2018, now serves as a platform for LG to benchmark technicians across multiple markets and identify training gaps that may require further investment.

Industry observers note that the initiative reflects a broader challenge for consumer electronics firms in Africa: keeping after‑sales networks aligned with rapid advances in connectivity, automation and energy‑efficient technologies embedded in modern appliances.

Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector produced 193,156 graduates in 2022, according to a 2025 Skills Training and Labour Institutions Survey, highlighting a sizable pool of potential technicians but also underscoring the need for industry‑specific upskilling.

Rakesh Singh, CEO of Opalnet, emphasized that skilled technicians and reliable after‑sales support are central to building customer trust and loyalty, reinforcing LG’s strategic focus on service quality beyond the point of sale.

LG’s expanded after‑sales training and competition aim to strengthen its regional network, ensuring that customers across East Africa receive consistent, high‑quality service throughout the product lifecycle.
