On 12 October 2026 the Kenya Revenue Authority sent an agency notice to First Community Bank directing the bank to transfer any funds it holds for former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi Gidion Kioko to KRA.
The notice, signed by debt‑enforcement manager Njoroge Muiruri, invokes Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, which permits KRA to designate a third party such as a bank as an agent of a defaulting taxpayer.
KRA demands a total of KSh 623,389,105, broken down into KSh 308,916,928 of principal tax, KSh 15,756,912 of penalties and KSh 298,715,265 of accrued interest for the period January 2015 to December 2019.
First Community Bank must remit the amount using a system‑generated payment slip and submit a return to KRA disclosing any funds held on Sonko’s behalf.
KRA warned that a partial payment will not lift the notice and that any bank that fails to comply without reasonable cause may become personally liable for the full sum under Section 42(13).
A copy of the notice was also sent to Sonko at a Nairobi post office box and to the email address recorded in KRA’s files.
