The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced on Tuesday, 13 October, that a notice circulating online directing schools to cease administering parallel termly examinations as substitutes for School-Based Assessment (SBA) projects is fake.

KNEC posted the warning on its verified X account, labeling the document with a prominent “FAKE” tag and advising schools, parents and other stakeholders not to act on its contents.

The forged circular claimed that schools should stop the practice of setting parallel examinations in place of the 2026 SBA projects and that feedback to parents must conform to policy guidelines by 31 October 2026.

KNEC clarified that no such instruction has been issued by the council and that the directive does not originate from any official KNEC communication.

The council emphasized that the SBA remains a core component of the Competency‑Based Curriculum, serving as continuous assessment throughout the school year, and any disruption could affect learner performance records.

Schools and parents are urged to rely solely on official KNEC communications, accessible via the council’s website and verified social media channels, and to report any suspicious documents purporting to be from KNEC.
