Governor Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga publicly announced her intention to run as President William Ruto’s deputy candidate in the 2027 general election.

She said she meets the same benchmarks used to assess male aspirants, citing mobilisation ability, public speaking skills and financial resources.

Waiguru disclosed that she has reached out to fellow women leaders to coordinate strategies ahead of the 2027 poll.

In the same forum she affirmed a longer‑term ambition to contest the presidency in 2032, outlining a two‑stage political roadmap.

Waiguru, who has governed Kirinyaga since 2017, is serving her final term and is constitutionally barred from seeking re‑election as governor.

Her entry adds to a competitive field that includes incumbent Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who is reportedly being backed for a second term.

The announcement comes as the Orange Democratic Movement continues negotiations with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance, with ODM insisting on the deputy slot as a minimum condition for any coalition arrangement.

Waiguru made the declaration at a women’s forum, challenging scepticism that often greets female politicians who express ambitions for top national office.
